before the session
-
Use sunscreen: Sun damaged skin cannot be tattoed.
-
Stay comfy: Wear something comfortable in darker colors and with easy access to the area, we’re tattooing.
-
Arrive fed and hydrated: Drink plenty of water and make sure you’ve eaten before our appointment and bring a snack just in case.
-
Avoid alcohol: Don’t drink the day before and after the appointment. Alcohol decreases your normal blood clotting ability, and may lead to increased bleeding during the tattoo session.
Please let me know if you’re planning on bringing a friend to the appointment. We’re three resident tattoo artists and often work at the same time. If it gets too crowded, your friend may be asked to wait for you outside.
During the session
-
Feel free to put on headphones, let me know if you need a break or something to drink, if you prefer to talk or not talk. I’ll do my best to accommodate your needs.
-
I will guide you through the process during the session. Feel free to ask if you have questions or concerns.
Immediate care
Your tattoo will be dressed in second skin from Dermalize™. If you know you are or might be allergic to the adhesive in this product, we will find a different solution.
-
Keep the second skin on: Leave the protective bandage or wrap on for 1-2 days after getting tattooed.
-
Gently clean: Remove the second skin by gently pulling a corner away from the tattoo. Gently wash the tattoo with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free soap. Do not use a cloth or sponge – use your hands to lightly cleanse the area.
-
Pat dry: Carefully pat the tattoo dry with a clean paper towel. Do not rub it.
-
Apply a thin layer of panthenol: Use a small amount of panthenol or your preferred tattoo aftercare ointment.
ongoing care
-
Clean regularly: Gently wash the tattoo once a day with a mild, fragrance-free soap.
-
Moisturize regularly: Keep the tattooed skin moisturized with panthenol or your preferred tattoo aftercare ointment. This helps in healing and prevents the skin from drying and flaking.
-
Avoid water immersion: Do not soak your tattoo in baths, hot tubs, swimming pools, or the ocean for at least 2-3 weeks. Showers are fine, but keep them brief.
-
No sunbathing: Keep the tattoo out of direct sunlight. Sun exposure can fade the ink and damage the skin. Once healed, use a high-SPF sunscreen on the tattooed area when going outdoors.
-
Avoid tight clothing: Wear loose, breathable clothing over the tattooed area to prevent rubbing and irritation.
-
Do not scratch or pick: As the tattoo heals, it will itch and possibly peel. This is normal. Do not scratch, pick, or peel the skin as this can damage the tattoo and lead to infections.
-
Healing Time: Healing times vary depending on the size and location of the tattoo, but typically it takes about 2-4 weeks for the surface to heal. Deeper tissue healing may take up to 6 months.
Signs of infection
While following these aftercare instructions significantly reduces the risk of infection, it’s crucial to monitor your tattoo for any signs of infection, which can include:
* Excessive redness or swelling
* Pus or unusual discharge
* Increasing pain or discomfort
* Fever or chills
If you notice any signs of infection, contact a healthcare professional immediately.
Proper aftercare is essential for your tattoo’s longevity and vibrancy. By following these simple steps, you can ensure your tattoo heals well and remains a beautiful addition to your body art for years to come.
